About Me

About me

Hello

I am a Sussex based photographic artist working with both traditional and experimental techniques. Much of my work leans towards the abstract. I use the camera as a tool to reflect my vision and imagination, exploring how landscapes can hold memory and emotion as well as physical presence. This idea of time being elastic — of past and present overlapping — runs through much of what I create.

I sometimes hand-finish my photographs with materials such as gold and silver leaf, paint, or stitch, creating distinctive one-off pieces. I am also interested in the connections between image and text, and I make books that bring together photographs with words, poems, and fragments of writing.

I have taken photographs from an early age and always had a strong visual awareness. Most of my career was spent in technology and web design, running my own business gave me the freedom to be flexible with my time and eventually to return to photography with renewed focus. Over the years, I have worked with and learned from highly regarded photographers, and I have achieved an Associate distinction with the Royal Photographic Society.

Experimentation and discovery remain central to the type of work I make today. At the heart of my practice is a curiosity about memory, place, and transformation

I have exhibited widely in Sussex and Kent, as well as in London and New York.  I have been featured in national publications and have given numerous talks about my photographic practice.

I try to keep this website up to date but my most recent work is likely to appear on my instagram feed here:

Background

I was born and grew up in Essex, living close to Southend-on-Sea. I have taken photographs for as long as I can remember and have a photograph of myself at about 7, with a box camera in my lap!

However, it was only later in my life that I began to take photography more seriously and started to think of myself as a “photographer”.

I moved from Essex to Kent to go to university in Canterbury, then settled in Sussex after graduation. My links with Sussex go deep as my father was Hastings born and bred; I have many childhood memories involve trips to Hastings and the surrounding area. So East Sussex is really where my roots are.

Later, photography became a mindful activity for me during a time when I was being pulled in many directions by the demands of home and job, teenage children and elderly parents. Morning dog walks with the camera were my “me” time and photography became my therapy.

However, I was still at the “point and shoot” stage, I loved the happy accidents which sometimes occurred but had no idea how to deliberately create those effects. So, I started to learn more formally and to slowly develop my skills and my own voice. The discovery of techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement and Multiple Exposure enabled me to create more abstract work, better suited to the ideas in my head and the way I see the world.

I studied with various photographers, notably Valda Bailey and Doug Chinnery. I also joined the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and have achieved an Associateship distinction with them (ARPS).

My working life was in IT, latterly running my own web development company for over 20 years. Being my own boss meant I was gradually able to carve out more time for my photography and to start exhibiting my work. I sold the web development business in 2023 and am now a full-time artist/photographer.

I don’t like to stand still with my work and enjoy experimenting and learning new techniques and ways to combine photograph with other media.
